Today I Read that the fastest growing income inequality is between white women and black women

Earlier this week in Slate, Kimberly Seals Allers addresses the growing income inequality between employed white women and black women. Providing historical context, Allers highlights the fact that the fight for gender equality has not lifted up all women.

Quick Summary: Although the pay-gap between men and women has been decreasing, the largest pay gap is actually the one between employed white and black women. Conversations about increased work-life balance detract from the fact minority women earn less and have less access to benefits such as paid sick leave and health insurance. Even for women of color in firms which offer flexible work policies, there is a fear that using such benefits will negatively impact their professional advancement.

Big Takeaway: In 1979 black women earned 6% of what white women earned. In 2016 black women earned 19% of what white women earned.

Something I did not know: In 1900, 26% of married black women were employed as compared to 3.2% of white women.

Makes me feel/think about: For as frustrating as the article was to digest, I am hopeful. As with many of the topics I have discussed, it is clear that the road to equality is long. If anything, the focus should really shift away from the general idea of 'equality' to the notion of equity- ensuring everyone has what they need to be successful given their unique background and circumstances.
